Mark your calendars! Don't miss this!

Multi-instrumentalists Rhys Jones and Steve Rosen play a concert of traditional Appalachian music and song on fiddle, banjo and guitar. Musical collaborators for over twenty years, Rhys Jones and Steve Rosen have traveled the world bringing powerful fiddling, tight vocal harmonies, and driving banjo and guitar to dances, festivals, concert halls and living rooms everywhere. With a repertoire ranging from the otherworldly music of southeastern Kentucky to the lively square dance tunes of the midwest, to the ballads of the old South, Rhys and Steve combine an archaic aesthetic with modern virtuosic performance to bring the traditional music and song of America to life.

Rhys Jones has been playing traditional Appalachian, French-Canadian and Irish fiddle music for 30 years. Born in Chicago, he began his fiddling at age 7 in the fertile environment of the Chicago Barn Dance Company. Soon after, his family moved to southern West Virginia where he learned from the older generation of fiddlers, including Ernie Carpenter, Melvin Wine, Glen Smith and Wilson Douglas. Rhys continued his musical education while living in Westport, County Mayo, Ireland, and has now played for concerts, dances, workshops and festivals across the United States and Europe, has won both fiddle and band contests at The Appalachian String Band Festival (Clifftop), and is regarded as "one of the bright lights of the current generation of traditional performers." Rhys has three albums with the Vigortone label, appears on numerous compiliations and recordings, and can be seen in the award-winning concert documentary "Absolutely Irish". Rhys is also known as an accomplished banjo and guitar player, and is always in demand as an accompaniest to both Irish and American music.
His debut album, "On The Shoulders of Giants" was called "the long awaited recording of up-and-coming fiddle genius Rhys Jones" by Folk Fire magazine. Rhys' CD "All I've Gots Done Gone" was picked by County Records as one of the best old-time release of the year. His latest release, "StarryCrown" was called "simply joyous" by Sing Out, who named him one of "the bright lights of the current generation of traditional music performers." County Records said, "the combination of great tunes and superb musicianship make this CD ... a 'must' for old-time fiddle fans." The California Bluegrass Association says, "Rhys Jones is one of the finest contemporary old-time fiddlers around."
Rhys now tours with the old-time and Irish trio "Hammer & String", who just released their newest, critically acclaimed CD "The Girl Who Broke My Heart" and performs regularly with the legendary Irish music and dance ensemble, "Mick Moloney's Greenfields of America." He makes his home in New York City. |
Steve Rosen is an icon of the Chicago old time music scene, playing hundreds of dances, festivals, and concerts over 30 years, on a multitude of instruments -- banjo, fiddle, guitar and mandolin -- as well as singing and playing with bluegrass and country bands. A founding member of the "Volo Bogtrotters," he and his driving and
melodic clawhammer banjo style helped define the sound of the band for 18 years, including four well-reviewed recordings. Steve has traveled from coast to coast playing for festivals and dance events, including Wheatland Traditional Music Festival, Battleground Fiddlers Convention, Augusta Heritage Week, California Traditional Music Society, Camp Wannadance, The Looking Glass Festival, Pinewoods Dance Week, as well as countless other national and regional dance weekends and festivals.
A longtime mandolinist and fiddler, Steve has opened shows for Ricky Skaggs and Earl Scruggs at the famous Old Town School of Folk Music, where Steve has taught banjo and fiddle for almost 20 years and counting. You can hear his voice and playing on many recording projects, and his tune, “Nail That Catfish to the Tree” has been
recorded by numerous bands and is a popular tune played at dances around the world. All of this is the tip of the iceberg, representing an enduring career in music that joyously continues with every strum, pick and song. |
