Chamizal Festival Celebrates Peaceful Border Experience with Three Days of Dance, Song, Music, & the Traditional Arts

October 8-10 in El Paso

Mexican, Spanish, Indian, and Irish music go well with jazz and the songwriters' craft at the 31th Chamizal Festival, in El Paso, which opens on Friday night Oct 8 with a kickoff Old Time Southwestern Dance Shindig with Antonia Apodaca from Rociada, and the Pete and JP Lewis  from Crow Flats, NM, and other festival artists at Convento at Loretto, 1400 Hardaway St, El Paso TX. The festival, which runs Oct. 9-10, features over 70 performers and artisans and is from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily.  Admission is free.

Held on the Chamizal National Memorial grounds at 800 S. San Marcial, the festival is designed to bring the community together "in exploration of our shared cultural richness," by bringing together outstanding representatives from a wide variety  of culturally influenced art forms, such as:  Mexican Roots Trio (San Antonio), Nosotros, Pete and JP Lewis (Crow Flats NM), Brendan Bulger and Bill Knox ( Ireland), Maria Ester Trio, Eliott's Ramblers, The Jemez Dancers from the Northern Pueblos, Steve Smith's Hard Road, Antonia Apodaca, Bayou Seco, the Fiddling Friends, Cipriano Vigil, Consuelo Luz, and Slim Ritchey's Dream Band. These musicians and many more artists and artisans will create an atmosphere of creative energy and cultural exchange.

Unlike some festivals, which are structured around a major performer with a singular performance, the Chamizal Festival, a celebration of our peaceful border experience, is intimate by design.

Most performers are involved in more than one 45 minute presentation and many also offer workshops.  This year, workshops will be presented on fiddle, guitar, harmonica, songwriting, storytelling, and mandolin.  Workshops will be held in the Los Paisanos Gallery.  Workshops are open both to the performers and to the public. There will be four performing stages: one indoors in the theatre, one in front of the Visitor Center, one in the amphitheatre area, and one to the side of the building by the parking area. The festival will be held rain or shine.

Admission is free.

Chamizal National Memorial, El Paso's National Park, is located at 800 S. San Marcial between Bowie High School and the Bridge of the Americas.

Linda Vik is one of the two classically trained musicians that I know who can also play old-time fiddle music. She's got a couple of actual degrees in music, has taught at the university level, and now lives, teaches, and plays with us in Albuquerque. Currently she's playing music from the seventeenth and eighteenth century with the Albuquerque Baroque Players (now that's ooold time!) and plays old-time tunes with Hey!, a band with Tim Shaffer, Chris Carlson, and Jane Phillips. Linda sent us "Daddy Didn't Sleep Last Night" that she learned from Marj Mullany. She suggests medleying it with "Walking in My Sleep."
