Meeting Highlights

March: The board approved a greater pricing spread for concert tickets: $6 for members and $10 for non-members.

April: Since few members appear to be interested in organizing the event, Boo Camp will not be held this fall.

June: The board approved supporting participation of old-time musician James Leva (and friends) in the Santa Fe Traditional and Bluegrass Music Fesitval on August 23-25 with $1200 toward expenses. In addition to enjoying the festival performances, FolkMADS will sponsor a house concert featuring James Leva on the Thursday before the festival.

Now is the time to start thinking about serving on the 2003 board!

MegaBand Tunes of the Moment -- Local History - Paul Rangel

by Bruce Thomson

Paul Rangel moved to New Mexico in 1979 to study lithography at the Tamarind Institute. He quickly became a fixture in the local traditional music scene playing mandolin, fiddle, and guitar. He has a great variety of musical interests and includes traditional tunes from all over the western hemisphere and Europe in his vast repertoire. While in New Mexico he was in some notable bands including the North Valley Scramblers, the Adobe Brothers (playing under the name of Obi Juan Adobe), and Bayou Seco. Paul went back out to California in 1984 and took Emily Abbink with him which left a big musical void in New Mexico. But they come back from time-to-time to escape the California weirdness and receive a green chile fix. They were here last month for Bayou Seco's 20th anniversary concert at the Zoo, and Paul recorded this nice march/polka for the Megaband's benefit.
