President's Message
Happy New Year to all our dancers, musicians, and their families. We have had a year full of dances, camps, and concerts, and the Board and members have been supporting music and dance events with our contributions of time and money. We are fiscally very sound because everyone works together in the community spirit that we do our best to create. The foundation of that spirit is the varied efforts of our many volunteers&endash;&endash;from planning and running events to managing monies and communicating with our membership&endash;&endash;countless hours are spent mostly behind the scenes. I personally want to thank each and every one of you for making FolkMADS the very special community it is. I want to apologize to anyone who feels unsung and let you know you are APPRECIATED!
The majority of people who help out do so as volunteers. A few of our workers (like bands and callers) are paid a little for their time and travel expenses but that mostly is an attempt to compensate them for out-of-pocket costs so that FolkMADS activities aren't a drain on them financially.
The FolkMADS Board recently decided to honor certain key people who regularly anchor special functions. They include Jane Phillips who wrangles our web page, John Arthur who handles memberships, Jonathan Longcore who takes care of our e-mail system, Donna Bauer who supports the phone hotline, Merri Rudd who coordinates our bulk mailings, and Nancy Ford who compiles the Calendar/Newsletter. They each will be given a year's membership as a special thank you.
I encourage you to join us for whatever task you think you have time for or to offer a special talent we could use. Many hands make for light work, and we always need people to replace those who have moved on to other things. Feel free to ask me or any Board member what jobs need filling. Thanks again for your continuing cooperation.
Kelly Kellstedt
President, 2004

MegaBand Tunes of the Month: Adair's Waltz and Shamrock Reel
Bruce Thomson
bthomson@NOSPAMunm.edu (remove NOSPAM when emailing)
Adair's Waltz and Shamrock Reel
Jamie Gans is a wonderful fiddle player and Tamara Loewenthal is a terrific dancer and caller. They're from Bloomington, Indiana and have visited New Mexico many times, most recently in early December when they played for dances and taught workshops in Las Cruces, Albuquerque, and Santa Fe. Jamie is accomplished in just about every genre of traditional fiddle music I can think of including old time, New England and the variety of Celtic styles including Irish and Canadian music. I've previously commented on his tremendous repertoire; he can play a three-hour dance of tunes I've never heard before. Tamara is also an accomplished fiddler who prefers old-time music. They left us two tunes: the Shamrock Reel which Jamie says Micky Doherty calls the oldest tune in Ireland, and Adair's Waltz, a lovely waltz written by Tamara. Watch the FolkMADS calendar and don't miss these folks next time they visit New Mexico.

Complete bio:
Tommy Peoples was born near a little village called St. Johnston, in the north east of the County Donegal. His initial lessons on the fiddle came from his first cousin Joe Cassidy (R.I.P.). From the moment of learning his first tune Tommy fell in love with the music and from an early age developed a style that was unique whilst holding on to his early Donegal influences.
As a teenager Tommy went to live and work in Dublin, where he became involved in the traditional music scene of the mid 1960s. His contemporaries of that period included Sean Keane and Matt Molloy of the Chieftains, Liam O' Flynn of Planxty, Paul Brady and Mary Bergin.
It was during this time that Tommy helped form a ceili band called "The Green Linnet" of which Mary Bergin was also a member. In that early period Tommy played his first professional performances with his friend Matt Molloy at the Old Sheiling Hotel.
Tommy's first commercial recording was done for Comhaltas, the Irish traditional music organization. It consisted mostly of live performances in folk clubs etc. and was recorded around 1969 -70. On that L.P. he recorded one of his earlier compositions, "The Green Fields of Glentown" which is also included on his new CD The Quiet Glen.
In the early seventies he formed a group with Matt Molloy (Flute), Peter Brown (Pipes), Triona Ni Dhomhnaill (Harpsichord and Vocals) and Liam Weldon (R.I.P.) a singer, bodhran player and beautiful song writer. This group was named "1691" the year of the treaty of Limerick. They recorded an album in Brittany France around 1972, which is not readily available. The group toured extensively and remained together for a couple of years.
Tommy's next venture, group wise, was as a member of the Bothy Band which also included Matt and Triona with the addition of Paddy Keenan (Pipes ), Micheal O Domhnaill, brother of Triona, (Guitar and Vocals) and Donal Lunny (Bouzouki and Bodhran). Tommy stayed with the Bothy Band for about a year and a half, from 1975 to 1976, when Kevin Burke replaced Tommy on fiddle.
Tommy plays on the first Bothy Band recording entitled "The Bothy Band 1975." Previous to this Tommy had recorded a solo album, accompanied by Paul Brady on guitar. This album was released on the Shanachie label.
In 1976 Tommy recorded with Matt Molloy and Paul Brady, simply entitled Tommy "Peoples - Matt Molloy And Paul Brady." He also features on various other recordings such as "Celtic Folkweave" with Micheal O Domhnaill and Mick Hanly and on Paul Brady's "Welcome Here Kind Stranger". Tommy also did a further recording on the Shanachie label around 1982 or so with Daithi Sproule on guitar entitled "The Iron Man" after the Scottish strathspey of that name played by Tommy on that album.
Tommy has seen both sides of traditional Irish music. In the early years when no traditional musician got paid but played merely for the enjoyment and a passion shared, to the commercial commodity that it has now become. During that process there was an element of exploitation, before musicians became even aware of the implications and unfortunately traditional musicians are still catching up.
The New Album "The Quiet Glen" contains some beautiful compositions of Tommy's interspersed with old traditional tunes. Thankfully the magic is still there.
Tommy now resides full time in Co. Clare near Ennis, where he has lived for the past 20 years. Clare is renowned for its traditional music. His daughter Siobhain, also an accomplished fiddle player, regularly performs with Tommy in the many sessions that can be found throughout Co. Clare.
Further information on Tommy Peoples can be found in the excellent book "Notes from the Heart." This book was written by P.J. Curtis. P.J. was road manager with the Bothy Band and went on to become a respected producer, producing albums for Altan amongst others.
